Hazuan Hashim and Phil Maxwell (directors of East End Lives 2 and 3) have been working together for several years on various film projects. The latest of these focuses on London’s East End, an area which is close to their hearts as it is where they themselves live. It is by means of interviews with local residents, some of whom originally hail from far away, and photographic evidence that they record and reveal the evolution of this eclectic district. Phil Maxwell’s background as a photographer and Hazuan Hashim’s skill as a video director blend together to create a portrait which is both moving and visually striking. The latest installment of their project, From Cable Street to Brick Lane, recently received a warm welcome at its opening night in London.
