Au début du vingtième siècle, un groupe de femmes déterminées à faire reconnaître le droit de vote pour le sexe dit “faible”, se lance dans une lutte acharnée qui bouscule les idées reçues sur la place des femmes dans la société. Rien ne semble les arrêter dans un combat qui aux yeux de la majorité est incompatible avec leur rôle d’épouse et de mère. Leur devise : “Ne pliez jamais, n’abandonnez jamais le combat”, pour reprendre les mots d’Emmeline Pankhurst incarnée par Meryl Streep.
In 1912 and 1913, a group of women determined to win the right to vote for the supposedly ‘weaker’ sex launch themselves into a battle they are ready to fight until the end. In doing so, they cast aside stereotypes about women’s role in society. Nothing is able to stop them in their battle which, in the view of most people at the time, is incompatible with their roles as wives and mothers. Their motto, using the words of Emmeline Pankhurst (played by Meryl Streep): “never surrender, never give up the fight”.
