Au fin fond de la campagne anglaise, Cassie vit dans une ferme avec ses deux filles. Depuis le départ soudain de son mari, elle doit faire face seule aux difficultés du quotidien ainsi qu’aux menaces répétées de voisins hostiles qui convoitent sa ferme. La chance semble lui sourire lorsqu’un inconnu, Aden, arrive chez elle et lui propose son aide en échange du gîte et du couvert. D’abord méfiante, Cassie se laisse séduire par ce mystérieux intrus. La présence de cet homme, qui apparemment vient à point nommé, fait en réalité rejaillir à la surface un terrible secret et annonce le début d’un véritable cauchemar.

Servi par un scénario d’une efficacité redoutable et une photographie de grande qualité, ce thriller vous tient en haleine du début à la fin. Il sera particulièrement apprécié des amateurs de sensations fortes. Pas étonnant que le film ait été sélectionné dans plusieurs festivals, dont Fantastic Film Festival d’Austin aux Etats-Unis cette année. Un film à ne manquer sous aucun prétexte.

Cassie lives on a farm in the heart of the English countryside with her two daughters. Since the sudden departure of her husband, she has to face her daily struggles alone as well as the constant threat of her hostile neighbours who desperately want to take control of her farm. Fate smiles upon her when a stranger, Aden, turns up at her home and offers her help in exchange for board and lodging. Although suspicious at first, Cassie lets herself be seduced by this mysterious uninvited guest. But in fact the arrival of this man, apparently just at the right moment, brings a terrible secret to the surface and marks the beginning of a real life nightmare.

With its impressively effective screenplay and high quality camerawork, this thriller will keep you on the edge of your seat from the very start and will particularly appeal to thrill seekers. Unsurprisingly, the film has been selected for several festivals including the Fantastic Fest in Austin, USA this year. A must-see!

Robert Stenuit est un homme seul dans un monde désert, luttant pour sa survie en solitude auprès des montagnes. Le jour, il observe le lac, et la nuit se cache dans une grotte des prédateurs inconnus. Un jour, un être apparaît de l’autre coté du lac, et disparait aussitôt sous l’eau. Robert, dévoré par le désespoir, rentre chez lui, seulement pour apprendre que quelqu’un l’y attend déjà.

Chris Thomas signe là un court métrage, dans lequel il parvient avec talent à créer une atmosphère étrange et angoissante. On est frappé par la qualité de l’image et du cadrage chez ce tout jeune cinéaste aux débuts prometteurs.

One day a figure appears on the far shore of the lake and disappears beneath the waters. He returns home consumed by despair, only to find something waiting for him.

Chris Thomas, creator of this short film, displays his talent by creating a strange and alarming atmosphere. What is really striking is the image quality and talent for composition shown by this young filmmaker with such a promising start.

Ce documentaire nous fait revivre le bras de fer auquel se sont livrés deux partis politiques britanniques, le Parti Travailliste (Labour Party) et le Parti Nationaliste (British National Party), dans la course aux élections de 2010 à Barking, banlieue multiculturelle et populaire de Londres. La réalisatrice Laura Fairrie a pénétré dans les coulisses de chacun des deux partis durant la campagne électorale. Elle nous livre un instantané incroyablement juste et réaliste du quotidien des candidats déterminés à convaincre les électeurs. Un certain nombre d’entre eux s’avèrent désabusés, aigris ou inquiets, et se laissent séduire par les idées extrêmistes du BNP. Un documentaire indispensable.

This film lets us relive the showdown between the Labour Party and the British National Party (BNP) during the 2010 elections in Barking, a working-class, multicultural borough of London. Director Laura Fairrie was able to get behind the scenes of the two parties during the electoral campaign. She delivers an incredibly accurate and realistic snapshot of the daily lives of the candidates as they fight to win over the voters. Many of them turn out to be disillusioned, embittered or worried, and let themselves be convinced by the BNP’s extremist ideas. An unmissable documentary.

Tous issus de l’East End londonien, Dilruba une jeune photographe, Les et Georgina un couple de retraités ou encore Imaan, âgée de onze ans, nous font revivre à travers leurs témoignages l’évolution de ce quartier. Filmés dans leur intimité, chacun d’eux raconte son vécu et certains se remémorent le passé avec émotion. Ces authentiques tranches de vies évoquées sont recueillies dans un court métrage qui met habilement en lumière la richesse culturelle d’un quartier connu pour sa diversité ethnique. C’est ce qui rend cet endroit si attachant aux yeux des cinéastes qui partagent la vie du quartier où il résident depuis plusieurs années.

Hazuan Hashim et Phil Maxwell ont présenté un documentaire intitulé Not In Our Name lors du Festival du Film Britannique 2009. Ils reviennent avec deux courts métrages qui nous ont séduits à nouveau.

Through accounts of individuals all originally from London’s East End, such as young photographer Dilrubaune, retired couple Les and Georgina and eleven year old Imaan, we relive the development of the district. Each of them shares their personal experiences and some emotionally recount their memories. These authentic glimpses into their lives are compiled in a short film that skilfully highlights the wealth of culture of an area well known for its ethnic diversity. This is what makes this place so engaging in the eyes of the filmmakers, who share the life of this district in which they have lived for many years.

Hazuan Hashim and Phil Maxwell presented a film entitled Not In Our Name two years ago at the British Film Festival 2009. They are back with two short films which have captivated us once more.

Dans ce troisième volet de la série de portraits documentaires consacrés au quartier de l’East End à Londres, Hazuan Hashim et Phil Maxwell ont recueilli les témoignages de deux femmes, ex-membres d’un groupe de chanteuses a capella ainsi que celui d’un jeune artiste qui vit dans l’ombre du quartier des affaires de Canary Wharf. L’histoire de l’East End depuis ces trente dernières années est retracée une fois de plus avec justesse et sensibilité. Le ton des habitants interrogés révèle une profonde et sincère affection pour un quartier où la convivialité et la solidarité ont raison des différences culturelles et religieuses.

In this third instalment of the series of documentary portraits devoted to the district of the East End of London, Hazuan Hashim and Phil Maxwell recount the personal experiences of two women, former members of a female singing group Acapella, as well as that of a young artist living in the shadow of the Canary Wharf business district. The story of the last thirty years of the East End is retraced once more with accuracy and sensitivity. The way the interviewed residents talk about their home reveals a profound and sincere attachment to a district where warmth and community spirit triumph over cultural and religious differences.

Ce film envoûtant, qui mêle amour, violence et fanatisme religieux, vous plongera dans l’époque la plus noire de l’Angleterre médiévale. A voir absolument. La projection sera suivie d’une discussion avec une spécialiste de littérature médiévale anglaise, Jodi-Anne George, qui s’intéresse aussi de près au genre cinématographique du medieval film.

Burke and Hare raconte l’histoire étonnante et pourtant véridique de deux Irlandais sans scrupules, William Burke (Simon Pegg) et William Hare (Andy Serkis), qui à Edimbourg au début du 19e siècle découvrent par hasard qu’un cadavre frais peut leur rapporter beaucoup d’argent… Bien décidés à faire fortune pour combler les désirs de leurs bien-aimées, les deux énergumènes commencent donc à orchestrer des « accidents » mortels dans le but d’accroître le nombre de corps qu’ils revendent à The Edinburg Medical College, où les illustres Docteurs Knox et Monroe ont besoin de cadavres pour leurs dissections.

Dans cette savoureuse comédie à l’humour noir, Simon Pegg, est loin de nous décevoir. Quant à Andy Serkis, que l’on connaît pour son interprétation de Gollum dans Lord of the Rings, il nous livre ici une performance d’acteur d’une drôlerie inimitable. Le ton et le style du film ont été comparés à celui des comédies produites par les studios Ealing à la fin des années 1940. Une atmosphère à la Sweenie Todd mâtinée d’un humour à la Kind Hearts and Coronets (Noblesse Oblige). On en redemande.

Burke and Hare is the surprising yet true story of two unscrupulous Irishmen, William Burke (Simon Pegg) and William Hare (Andy Serkis) who discover that a fresh cadaver in early 19th century Edinburgh can be quite profitable… Determined to make their fortune and please their lovers, these two maniacs begin to orchestrate a series of fatal “accidents” in order to supply an increasing amount of bodies to The Edinburgh Medical College where the renowned Doctors Knox and Monroe are in need of cadavers for dissection.

In this delightfully dark satire, Simon Pegg does definitely not disappoint. As for Andy Serkis, known for his interpretation of Gollum in The Lord of the Rings, he delivers an unrivalled and hilarious performance. The tone and style of the film have been compared to those of comedies produced by Ealing studios in the late 1940s – a style similar to that of Sweeny Todd laced with the humour of Kindhearts and Coronets.

Adolescent cultivé, plutôt égoïste et sûr de lui, Oliver âgé de 15 ans a deux obsessions. Il est déterminé à sauver le mariage de ses parents. Ayant constaté que leur couple bat de l’aile, surtout depuis que sa mère est éprise de leur voisin, un gourou décalé, le garçon se sent investi d’une mission : empêcher le divorce imminent. En meme temps, il fait l’expérience de ses premiers émois amoureux avec Jordana, une jeune fille de son âge aux tendances pyromanes, qu’il est bien décidé à séduire.

Submarine est un film drôle, oscillant entre cynisme et légèreté rafraîchissante, où l’on reconnaît dans le rôle de la mère une actrice que l’on voit régulièrement au Festival du Film Britannique et dont on apprécie le talent et la drôlerie : Sally Hawkins (Made in Dagenham / We Want Sex et Happy Go Lucky / Be Happy). La bande musicale du film comblera les amateurs de pop anglaise contemporaine.

Having noticed that their couple is floundering, especially since his mother has fallen for their neighbour – an eccentric guru – the adolescent assigns himself a mission: to prevent their imminent divorce. Meanwhile, he experiences the pain of first love with Jordana, a young girl of the same age with pyromaniac tendencies, whom he is determined to seduce.

Submarine is an entertaining film, with just the right amount of cynicism to remain refreshingly light-hearted. You may recognise the familiar face of the talented actress Sally Hawkins who plays the role of Oliver’s mother and has appeared regularly on the screens of the British Film Festival (Made in Dagenham/ We Want Sex and Happy Go Lucky/ Be Happy). The film’s soundtrack will delight fans of contemporary English pop music.

Un écrivain anglais, Charles Condomine (interprété par un tout jeune Rex Harrison), veut écrire un livre sur le spiritisme. Il fait alors appel à Madame Arcati, medium de profession, pour en apprendre plus sur le sujet. Cette dernière organise une séance, au cours de laquelle elle invoque accidentellement l’esprit de la défunte épouse de Charles, Elvira. Les ennuis commencent car Charles est remarié, et les deux femmes vont devoir cohabiter.

Tirée de la pièce à succès de Noel Coward, cette délicieuse comédie ensorcelle le spectateur et confirme par la même occasion la diversité du talent de David Lean, aussi à l’aise dans le registre de la comédie d’esprit (si l’on puit dire) que dans celui de l’adaptation des grands classiques de la littérature. Un an plus tard, il tourne Great Expectations puis Oliver Twist en 1948.

English writer, Charles Condomine (played by a young Rex Harrison), sets out to write a book about spiritualism. He therefore contacts Madame Arcati, a professional medium, in order to learn more about the subject. During their séance they accidentally encounter the spirit of Charles’ late wife, Elvira. This is where the trouble starts as Charles has remarried and the two women are going to have to “live” together.

Adapted from the successful play written by Noel Coward, this delicious comedy bewitches the spectator whilst showcasing the extent of David Lean’s talent. This director is equally at ease with the register of “spiritual comedy” as he is with the adaption of literary classics. A year later he went on to film Great Expectations and then Oliver Twist in 1948.

Ce documentaire porte un regard à la fois tendre et amusé sur un phénomène en apparence futile: l’attrait qu’exercent les romans à l’eau de rose Mills & Boon (l’équivalent anglo-saxon de la série Harlequin) sur un lectorat féminin, mais parfois aussi masculin, en mal d’amour et de romantisme. Le film mêle habilement cinq histoires, qui expriment cinq conceptions du sentiment amoureux. Nous découvrons des hommes et des femmes ordinaires répartis aux quatre coins du monde : deux couples, l’un vivant en Angleterre l’autre au Japon, une Indienne rêvant de reconquérir l’homme qui l’a quittée, et deux célibataires, l’un mannequin pour romans photos sur la côte ouest des Etats-Unis et l’autre auteur britannique à succès de romans Mills & Boon. Le documentaire parfois très proche de la fiction examine dans une approche originale et astucieuse le fossé qui sépare les histoires d’amours idylliques propres à ce type de littérature et la réalité du quotidien qui n’est pas toujours aussi glamour.

This documentary takes a tender and whimsical look at a supposedly trivial phenomenon: the appeal of the Mills & Boon romance novels (the English-language equivalent of the Harlequin series) for a female and even a male audience in search of love and romance. The film consists of five separate stories, which explore five different concepts of love. We discover the tales of ordinary men and women from the four corners of the globe: two couples, one living in England, the other in Japan, an Indian women who dreams of being reunited with the man who left her and two single people – a book cover model from the US west-coast and a successful British Mills & Boon author. This documentary, itself often reminiscent of a work of fiction, examines in an original and clever way, the gulf which separates the idyllic love stories depicted in this genre of literature from the reality of our not-so glamorous lives.
